If there is play in the lower control arm bushings you can get loud clangs and bangs from the front end. Lift the front end and compress the front springs enough (use a coil spring compressor)so the preload from the spring is removed from the lower control arm. Then try to move the arm around with a large dead blow hammer. You should not be able to see the arm move around when you hit it.
