I've done a few of them in years past and this is the first time I have heard of soaking the seal in hot water beforehand, what a great idea that makes sense! A slurry of dawn dish soap works great, I've usually used whatever slippery spray I had nearby in an aerosol can. WD40, white lithium, chain lube, etc.

A trusted friend? I usually have the choice of my wife or a 12 year old kid! Life is a gamble...
