Tempest, I've had the motor and trans mounted to the frame, and it seemed secure. The mounts are pretty substantial and the 3 bolts each seem to hold it well.
If I had thought, before powder coating the frame, I probably would have, only for peace of mind. So if you haven't painted your frame, I can't think of a reason to not weld in a gusset.
If I have to do it now, I'll be really mad at myself.
