I usually do it with the motor idling backing off each one until it begins to clack then retighting just until it quiets then 1/4 turn more. As for the initial timing, I usually start at ten degrees and finesse it from there. The idle is different for an automatic transmission vs a manual but around 750ish will be a good starting point.

That's how I do mine. I use those little clips so the oil doesn't squirt out.
