In regard to your speedometer, I imagine at the speed you were traveling you wouldn't see any movement at the needle. You could set the rear axle on jackstands , put her in gear, and let the wheels spin up some while checking the speedo. Obviously use great caution here unless you want another door in the back of the garage.

And yeah, you are probably right about the speedometer. When I first plugged in into the dash I turned the cable by hand and it budged a little, so there's that.
