Well then there you go. The spring is absolutely required to assist the motor to raise the full weight of the window upright and overcome the seal resistance.
Examine the spring and regulator carefully to determine why it was laying loose. I would suspect something is broken, as it just isn't right. I'd be uncomfortable buttoning everything up not knowing why that spring wasn't where it belonged.
