Yes, thats correct. The face plate fills that gap around the rectangle face. Then you have to figure out the plastic washers for the knobs. I can't remember exactly what i did there but, I think I may have added some spacer washers behind the dash as well.
Sorry about the bad luck some people have had with retrosound units, Mine has been rock solid so far.
