In 1979 driving back alone from Alaska, I picked up hitchhikers every chance I had. There was never a sketchy rider and they were all very nice and I learned a lot about the country through the vast miles of YT and BC. A few of them bought me meals and/or gas in return for the ride.
I stopped in Kootenay NP to go backpacking and met a couple and another guy, and the four of us continued hiking together. I spent an extra night and went over another pass with them even though that exceeded my permit (were the mounties going to come chase me down in the wilderness?
).
The couple later got divorced and I lost track of them, but I still correspond with the other gentleman 40+ years later
