We've taken parts to machine shops before and been a little disappointed in what they handed back. Glad to be able to mess parts up myself now

Yes, a red scuff pad with Dawn. I don't think there are any set rules on how long oil will last. We put in a mini split a couple summers ago which has really cut down on humidity in the shop so it's not as critical now. Parts will still get fingerprint rust due to the acids in sweat, but a light oiling cuts down on rust due to humidity. You can use Ospho to coat bare steel to keep it from rusting but it has to be scrubbed off with more Ospho then neutralized before using epoxy primer. I think its ok to leave under enamel though.
