you could build a quick H pattern out of scrap plywood or something and use a vernier caliper or even a screwdriver or some other rod as a depth finder. it wouldn't take much.
sometimes I get like that too, I have to tell myself to quit googling and just do the job, it would take less time, haha.
sometimes the fun is in making a new tool though.
