GM started developing a range of crawlers (bulldozers) in the early 50's on their own and decided to buy Euclid so as to be able to offer a full range of heavy equipment. Detroit Diesel Division and Allison were also very much involved in the operation, and I think the result kept Caterpillar engineers up nights for many years.
