Those emblems were owner installed. A very common thing that owners might do. I think that's a 69-70 SS 396 fender emblem you saw. Maybe 71/72, too.

As far as the 69-72 truck emblems go, they came on trucks with optional engines, both 6cyl and 8cyl. There were 292 emblems with only that on them, while the 350, 396, and 400 V8 engines also had the 8. No engine badges on 67/68 Chevy trucks and 67-72 GMCs never used any at all
