The biggest thing is to keep dust, dirt, metal shavings, etc. out of the engine while it's sitting. Keep any holes leading into the cylinders or crankcase covered with painters tape at a minimum. You could also drape a towel over the whole thing after taping the holes.

Keep any grinding, drilling, or welding away from the engine so you don't throw metal shavings on it
