Old 919 used to sport Black/Gold plates when I bought it. The military made me register my truck and get a driver's license in the state that was my Home of Record. My parents had moved to Arizona, so that was the new ''Home.''
I had to turn in my Calif. [10 566 A] and get an AZ plate [2JY150] at the MVD [not DMV].

That is a good question! The L on the end of my plates indicates they're from 1971 or 1972. If my truck was owned by CalTrans originally, then it would have had state government plates stamped "Exempt", and would have been removed before selling the truck to the general public. It's also possible that it spent its first few years of existence in another state.
