In hindsight, this makes perfect sense.
23D "looks" like an interior code.
For exterior colors "U" (or upper) is for the primary exterior color, like 29U. "L" (or lower) is for secondary colors (like the inset, or across the bottom) so "K" must be for the separate fiberglass top.
For many years they were available only in black and white, but in later years became available in some limited body colors.
