Typically the colder it is and the longer it has sat the worse it is.

My 2000 Silverado has been doing that since it was new and it has 175K on it now.
Cheers
My buddy bought a brand new 98 Chevy 4x4 and it had piston slap that went away after warming up. He took it back to the dealer and the service manager said keep driving it and bring it in just before warranty expires.
He did and they dropped a new engine in. It was installed only a short time and soon develop the same issue. The original never died nor did the replacement.
