The plumbing for the canister isn't all that complicated. It is teed off the PVC line and then the other line is to one of the ported connections to the carb. Which from your engine photo I can see the PCV line (that's the big one from the front of the carb to the driver's side valve cover) isn't teed to the canister.
Even if it was the canister would very likely need to be pulled to be replaced or recharged (I recharged my, its a PITA but can be done). Just don't break it, it is even more of a PITA to replace the canister with a correct period one. Don't ask me how I know that ;-)
Though checking those gas lines in the cab is a good thing to check. Actually all the gas lines should be checked IMO, there are little ones under the cab too, so don't miss those!
