Steve,
You said "in retrospect I would have used the 3M adhesive". Isn't that what you used, in a spray? Are you saying theres a brush on?

What was the backing on your headliner?

Like I said, the backing on mine is thin Luan plywood which will keep it from sagging I'm sure but the roof has a curve to it. I'm going to have to dry fit and see how the luan "bow's" into place to mate to the interior roof metal.
