I'm betting money that when gasoline use as a fuel for motor vehicles began, there was the same sort of resistance, and quite possibly worse. Difference is that batteries carry both fuel and oxidizer together, so the oxidizer can't be easily separated. That's a hurdle that probably can't ever be jumped.
