Cashier's checks cannot be trusted unless you call the issuing bank to authenticate it. Even if your bank will cash it, which is quite common.

I haven't been there, done that, but know two people who have. One had the FBI knock on his door for passing a bad check! He had already spent the money on another car and, of course, the car he sold was long gone.

The other guy smelled a rat, so did not go through with the transaction. A big clue is a buyer offering asking price or more.
