You could try to count the teeth on your starter and go to parts store to check that yours is correct. I doubt that was the problem though. Either like already said about spring or starter needs shimmed where it mounts up so it meshes the flywheel correctly.
It's not uncommon to get a starter that is a real pain to shim correctly. I fought one forever and finally put on a new one. The new one meshed perfectly.
I wonder when you get a rebuilt 350 starter just how many times that thing may have been rebuilt. I am getting to the point I only buy new and not rebuilt when anything comes from a generic parts store. Of course I'm getting older and crusty about things too so it may not be necessary.
