On my '78, I used Rage Extreme on the few areas where filler was required. Really good stuff, but not cheap.
For small stuff, I really like POR-15's epoxy putty. I like it better than filler. It's hard as a rock. I use it for quite a few things, including filling in small rust areas (after cleaning them out first, of course!).
Wouldn't be good for skim coats, but for filling in areas, it's really nice to work with.
