That is exactly what should happen when you try and instal a 1967-70 tie rod into a 1971-72 centerlink, however I am perplexed why the 1971-72 tie rod is too large diameter to fit unless they gave you a outter tie rod instead of an inner.
Take your digital caliper and measure and find out whats going on with the centerlink, spindle and the tie rods, you may find you have the wrong tie rod end not the wrong year, keep in mind they are tapered so you will have to be careful how you measure.
