Not to contradict but, I just put the filter on and fill with 5 qts. No issues from that ever. The oil pump picks up from the pan you just filled. Figure later vehicles have sideways filters you can't fill first...or remove without making a mess. I hate changing oil in my '90s 44wds. The driveshaft is directly below the filter so you can't whip it out real quick. And the '92 was a diesel. Yeah, oil turns to black paint in 100 miles
