If the transmission torque converter was staying locked, it will cause a stall, but not until the vehicle comes to a stop, or nearly stopped. Slowing down, it would not cause the engine to die.

It sounds like your vehicle could have an EGR valve that is sticking open. Disconnect and plug the vacuum hose going to the EGR valve and take it on a test drive and see if the problem goes away. Driving without the EGR working will set a trouble code if you drive it long enough that way.
