I keep a small, number 8 nail that is first bent to 90 degrees, and then has the sharp end ground down flat. I use pliers to hold the nail, and then push in on the door panel. Slip the nail behind the wire clip, hook the clip and pull gently. It pops right off. You catch the clip, install on the new handle, and push it back on.

I've done it that way for 40+ years. Hook the open end toward the handle (away from the door panel) and it has never damaged anything... Have used that on all types of Chevrolet handles... Impala, Camaro, C/K Truck, Nova... Works on them all...
