I'm a bit younger than some of you folks. I was 15 in 1978 and minimum wage went from $2.90 to $3.10 while I was at my first job. By the time I started at the Shell station, I think it paid $3.50?
I didn't stay there long though. When I graduated and went full-time at the machine shop that was $14.01 and the Monday after I turned 18, I got bumped to 2nd shift I hated that, but it was an extra $0.35 shift-differential.

The great thing about being a pessimist is that you are either pleasantly surprised or right.
