You asked if the Pertronix Ignitors/Flamethrower coils needed a resistor, or stock resistor wire? Negative. Like an HEI you want to feed the Positive side of the coil with a full time, full 12VDC. No resistor.

My Auto Sun [by AutoMeter] tach has outlasted my points system, my Pertronix II, and is currently running on a ''1976'' -vintage GM HEI w/ separate coil. [I have to tell the kid at the parts counter it's for a '76, otherwise, with the imperative wisdom imbued in him by a New Cybernetic Order, I'll hear "That part won't fit a '68.'' All hail our new robotic overlords.]

A friend of mine with a '72 F-250 w/BBF 429 put a Pertronix III on his engine. Tach no go. He called Pertronix's customer service tech line. The guy said to switch back to a P-II if he wanted a tach. Or get a mechanical, like in 'Vettes. He still has no tach.
