Approved rim width on the 305/70/16 is 8.0-9.5
Approved rim width on the 285/75/16 is 7.5-9.0
Some people like the biggest looking tire possible.
I run 285/75/16 on factory 16x6.5 wheels. They look great and don't wear funny.
