Back in the day, a very popular replacement was made by Fram. They used their Ford part number PH8A filter, probably because the adapter has a smaller diameter than the O-ring that the canister mounted onto. The Chevy filter has the O-ring near the perimeter, but you don't put 2 O-rings together. That's asking for a leak.
The canister type filter was very efficient at cleaning the oil, but people didn't like the amount of labor required with taking it apart and cleaning it out. Another downside was picking that O-ring out of the block. If a piece gets left behind (and a really hard O-ring can be a blue steel ***** to get out in one piece), you are guaranteed a leak. Ask me how I know.
