FYI: I did rely on these LMC diagrams for a reference when buying the donor '79 core support and they claim the 73-80 core supports be the same

No difference between GMC and Chevy hardware they all mount the same. Your grill should be fine the way you mounted it, it is supported in the middle and on the ends.
