These are used when the slip yolk has a hole in the back side for air discharge. That's next to the u-joint. They are not needed when you have a missing spline and now hole. That style is designed to force air back into the transmission. Install the drive line yolk when you press it on and it will keep the piece centered so it doesn't stretch out of shape.

You have likely stretched the thin metal during the removal process.
If they cock back and forth during the removal process it can stretch them out of tolerance. Loctite may be an option? I don't really recommend it but?

I haven's seen too many of these on modern transmissions. Typically THM350 and the like.

If you want to keep it you will likely require a replacement. Your local transmission shop will likely have some setting around. If not let me know as I have some.
