It has to sit on the plate and rest against the raised bump on the plate. That is why you have to pull the shift lever back toward you to shift the transmission into the park position, to get the arm detent over that boss.

Thank you Leon! For years I have wondered why my pointer goes so far to left, now I find out I was doing it wrong. I'm going to try to readjust my shift rod today, and see how it works.
