I don't have experience with any carbs other than a q-jet. I rebuilt mine a couple years ago with much success, and I couldn't be happier.
If you go looking for one, the later ones are better...think..from 1976 on. There is a julian date stamped onto the main body.
Get Cliff Ruggles book if you want to do it yourself. He will send you all the parts as well. Or, he will do it all for you for about twice as much.
These carbs have gotten a bad rap over the years, mainly because a lot of people (including some mechanics) don't really know how to tune them properly. When properly rebuilt, and tuned, you would be hard pressed to find a better, more durable carb than the q-jet....IMHO.
