The high pressure pump is enough to pull the fuel on a stock configuration. I know the early Dmax didnt' have a lift pump and we have a 2012 LML at work and it doesn't either.
Gotcha on the 3 speed column. My truck was auto so I just used that and rigged a Lokar cable to make it work.
