Maybe I'm odd (see how I left room for error?), but I have never wanted a 305 and never had one, but I like 283s and 307s. Yes, 307s. I feel they are one of the best engines GM has made. Set aside the big/better, need to brag, one-upness, machismo, need to compensate for other short comings, etc, and you will find a motor that runs longer, moves a truck right along just fine, and gets fuel economy a 350 can't touch. I've heard the same about never rebuild a 307. Well, I did and it was a memorable motor. I gave it added pep, didn't hurt/maybe helped fuel economy, sounded great (got comments all the time). Yeah I probably ended up with stock 350 power, but I enjoyed the build, how it wound out, and 13 mpg in a '71 K/20 with 4.57s,37/14.50 rubber, utility bed full of tools, materials in the bed, and ladders/scaffold on the racks. I always wanted to try that motor in a shortbed 2wd.
