I've done that before. Just borrow the gf/wife's red nail polish and put a dot on the bolt and on the pan to remind you it goes there so you don't accidentally force it into another hole and strip it next time.

Helicoil is the other option, which works well and is easy to install on aluminum. Just remember to break off the tab before installing the bolt.
