Congrats to your son for graduating.
I use Cleco fasteners or vice grips to hold the sheet metal nice and tight.
Before long you'll become more comfortable with spot welding floor patches into place. Sometimes I have to get the hammer to persuade the sheet metal into place. It takes time but the prize is the end result, not how quickly you got through it.
Keep at it your doing fine.
