I'm doing a 53 & S10 swap just up the road from you in Windsor. Just getting started. In regard to your title, in Calif. if you inquire at DMV, either in person or on line, you automatically get recorded into the system. Sooo, if your vehicle is unregistered & so old it is not in the system, now all of a sudden you are back in the system & subject to all the deadlines to get it registered & back penalties. You are better off to use a professional title company & let them do it.
They know all the tricks to avoid penalties. It cost me about $300 to get mine registered & I had no title at all, just a bill of sale & we didn't even use that. If you are titled it is easy unless you have penalties. The people at DMV don't really know how to handle these old cars & trucks & if you ask the wrong question or give the wrong answer, you're screwed. There is a very good title person in Santa Rosa.
