I don't have a lathe either, so this will be an experiment. I've always wanted to try making my own shafts, all I have to lose is some 2" tubing.
I will have to take it to a driveline shop for balancing at any rate. If I can't achieve acceptable runout myself, I will cut and fit everything and have them true,weld and balance the shaft.
