What JEREMY told you is the way it's supposed to be done, Even though sometimes there is something in the way of doing it, like the tranny,crossmember etc. The reasoning being it's the place where the most backpressure is swirling,IE: building heat.
This came to me from a friend that builds custom exhaust for race cars and streetracers.
