Because the corvette is the top dog in the GM food chain. It had to either have (or be said to have) more power than its in house competition.
We just bought a 99 vette (14k mile beauty) for the missus. I wasn't impressed when I read the LS1 5.7 under the hood was only rated at 345 hp but I'll tell you what- the car goes like a raped ape. I guess because its so light. Handles like a slot car too. Lots of fun.
