This is where I would start too. Just after I got my truck back on the road late last year, the shop that did my rebuild had the timing set at spec. It would run fine in the shop, and OK down the road, but after I got a few miles on the engine it started acting the same as the problem you have. Took it back in and we started timing adjustment by feel. Final turned out to be around 18 degrees, but she ran like a new truck.
