I have one of each currently. I've owned a few 250s over the years and one 292.
The big difference to me is the ultra-long stroke of the 292. It makes its torque peak at 1800 (!) rpm. The long stoke also means that spinning that engine up to higher rpm results in a really high piston speed. This can put large loads on the main/rod bearings.
So, to me, the 250 is a little "sportier" than a 292. I try to keep the rpm down on my 292 and use it like it was designed: a low-end grunter.
