I also used that intake on my 283. I did the 68 base gasket that goes under the metal plate, stuck the metal plate on top of that, then put another gasket that wasn't for the "hot slot" manifold on top of the metal plate to help with sealing and act as a small insulator. I didn't plug the holes, but I haven't had any issues with it after over a year of driving the truck a lot.

If you wanted to run a carb spacer, you could decrease the height of the air cleaner base by the amount of the spacer to clear the dizzy
