The metal trim does not make it a straight line it simply went over the origional panel in-between the front and rear posts. The trim slides over the panel.

The spacer plan is a good one but you would not be able to use the stock chrome trim, if you had it. It was a CST trim piece. The spacer and panel would be to thick for the trim to slide over.

Here are picts I put a trim on a 72 that is awaiting interior. I mocked up the trim so you could see it.

On my other 72 I had my upolstry guy use a thin piece of plywood and then covered it with vinyl to match. The plywood was thin enough that we could bend it around the posts and use screws to hold in place.

If you could use a thin piece of allum that could be held with screws around the post that would be cleanier and like stock.
