Pipes out the back will help get rid of the resonance even if you run straight pipes. It was bad enough with my 71 when I had a pair of burned out glass packs that had been on a 65 I had had that turned out and exited in front of the rear wheels. It was fun on runs to town but I drive 23 miles to work and the drone got pretty tiresome after a couple of years. I went to Headers, turbos (unknown brand but free) and tail pipe that exit behind the rear wheels and it's comfortable in the cab now but it still has a good rumble and sounds great with the windows down.
I've always said that I like a sweet and distinctive set of pipes but I've long outgrown loud just for the sake of being loud.
