GMC's built at Oshawa for the Canadian market used the Chevrolet VIN format and used a 9 between the Chassis and Engine codes to denote GMC. They also used 100,001 as a starting number.
But because your truck was going to the USA, it uses the USA GMC format which has a starting number of 10,001. That's 10,001 with the first truck. So 20,539 - 10,000 is 10,539. Thanks for the kind words, Bruce

Hey Bruce - thanks for this. Somehow I'm having a hard time following. If there were less than 1500 made of these stepside Chev 4x4's in 71 in the US - how is it possible it's number 10539? Or are you just saying GMC's in general? Not 4x4 Fendersides.
