This isn't the first time I've heard of issues w/ alt style swaps not working as expected. I'd wonder if some step was missed, or misinterpreted.
Troubleshooting vs. replacing random parts is cheap vs. expensive. We all need to learn to troubleshoot.
My point is, we need to learn a bit of Ohm's Law, get a DVM, and think about what's going on. Ohm's Law only has 3 variables, all but one are typically constants, and one is a result (math joke). It isn't that hard.
Once we understand the basics of how the (electrical in this case) system works, we can think about what's going wrong. When you forgot your phone, and dead on the side of the road, you need this.
