I'm a little bit of a cheater, I run a 12 valve Cummins turbo diesel turned up a little bit backed by an nv5600 6 speed transmission, NP205 transfer case, and 3.73s turning 35" tires (I've also ran 37s on this setup). There is a link to my build thread in my signature: "The Dakota Cadillac".

It works awesome towing, I can drive a loaded trailer at 75-80mph with power to spare. I do typically slow it down to 70 to save on fuel. Empty I've averaged just under 20mpg and loaded it's given me 15/16mpg. I love the truck but it was a lot of work to put together and is still a work in progress, but it's driven great in the 2 1/2 years since I did the conversion.

I've also owned an 88 350 powered 3/4 ton truck (700R4, 4:10s, & 31s), pulled the same loads, and it isn't a comparison to the diesel. But driving at a reasonable speed it always got the job done, just not as quickly.
